Alyssa moved through the crowd of students, with less grace than a duckling. Still, she managed. She had already had her fair share of dances with her fellow students. That was her favorite part of being single and not having dates for these types of things. She could join up with one person and leave with a completely different one. Right now though, Alyssa wanted a drink and even though she was in school, she was definitely old enough to have both butter beer and fire whiskey.
She took a seat near the bar that had been set up and a bottle of fire whiskey popped in front of her along with two shot glasses. Bloody house elves, they always assumed everyone was in pairs at dances. Only once had she gone with a date and that had been completely dull. The boy never left her side, not even to go and get them punch. He had actually asked her if she wanted to punch and then proceeded to drag her and go and get drinks. Long story short, he had been far too clingy for her tastes. Since then she had gone to dances solo and would find a random person to hang around. Hell these were socials after all.
Alyssa took a quick shot from her bottle, pushing the glasses away. Why bother measuring the amount of alcohol she consumed tonight? There were plenty of people around to guarantee that she would not be the biggest, drunken ass. She stayed seated at the bar, gazing over the crowd as they enjoyed the night. There were a number of people around her as it was and she could easily find company with any of them. "Oi! Any of you lot looking for someone to make you a less of a wallflower?" She called out to them.

He'd been assured that he looked very dashing in his suit, and it wasn't just the saleswoman telling him that either. His friend who'd gone with him to make sure no one cheated him, had told Jack he looked good in it as well. And so, Jack stood confidently in front of the mirror, running a hand down his tie to make sure it was straight and put on properly. Once he was sure his suit was perfect, Jack put on his second pair of enchanted shoes. He had a couple of pairs of shoes like this, one for everyday wear, one for dressing up and another in a different color. Finally, Jack reached out to his bedside table and put a pair of dark sunglasses on over his white, sightless eyes. He didn't want anyone giving him any funny looks and when he wore the sunglasses, he felt like people stared a whole lot less. With his shoes in place, the Hufflepuff could finally leave the dormitory without running into anyone by accident. He knew his dormitory and Common Room by heart, so he was often walking around them without his shoes on. Still, people in the Common Room often left things lying about or just lounged around on the floor and he'd trip over them if he was barefoot. The boys in his dormitory tended to keep things neat and tidy for him, so he wouldn't trip over every little thing. Tonight was the Gala and though Jack hadn't been able to get a date this time around, he didn't mind going stag. His last date had been annoying helpful. She seemed to think that just because he was blind, he was helpless. 'Here Jack, I brought you food. It's chicken!' and she'd needless guide his hand toward the plate or else, try to feed him. 'Look out Jack, there's someone next to you. Move it you turkey! You almost ran over poor Jack! Are you okay Jack?' Halfway through the date, he'd ended up shouting at his date and ending it on the spot, angry and offended that she saw him as so very helpless. Nope, it was a lot better to go to these things dateless than to suffer through them with an overly helpful date. Walking into the Great Hall, he could tell it was a lot different, it was much more open and he knew that there would be plenty of room to dance and make merry. Suddenly, he heard Alyssa Abbot's shout and smiled slightly, so she wanted company? He sneaked back, blending into the crowd, he wove his way confidently through the people, and then judging from the way her chair was facing, thanks to his shoes giving him a mental image of his surroundings, he sneaked up behind Alyssa. Jack had no idea which way she was facing however and he hoped that he wasn't trying to sneak up on her right in front of her eyes. That would ruin his fun! He leaned in close to her and whispered, "Hark! Doth mine ears deceive me? Is that a foghorn I hear?" and he quickly ducked down, just in case Alyssa panicked and attacked. Chortling, Jack straightened up and plopped himself down in a vacant chair next to her. "I smell spirits." He teased lightly, "Want to dance or should we sit here and talk or what? I'm up for anything." he told her, "I take it you're going stag just like me. Either that or you're with someone who's big and beefy and scary and just want to see poor innocent adorable boys like yours truly being pounded flatter than parchment when they try taking you away." he joked.
