He'd been unable to sleep properly for weeks now and whenever he did, his dreams were filled with images of a lovely red headed girl. Mary was always in his dreams, she was always laughing and smiling, and he was usually chasing her, laughing along with her. When Luke couldn't sleep, he was thinking about her. He'd toss and turn for hours at a time and then finally, he'd just end up writing on parchment until he was too tired to think anymore.
Luke paid attention in class, but whenever he could, he'd doze when he thought he wouldn't get caught and he'd been put in detention a couple times as a result, but nothing really worked to keep his mind off of Mary. She was always in his thoughts, always in her dreams.
But, he was frightened. Frightened to tell her because he didn't know if she would be willing to try. She seemed to push away every single guy she'd ever been with. He knew why, it was because of her mother abandoning the family. Mary wouldn't want to turn out like her mom at all and would keep every boy at arm's length. But Luke didn't want to give up without a fight. He wouldn't let Mary get away from him.
Still, day after day he'd struggle with himself, trying to summon up the courage to ask her on a date, confess his feelings for her but each time he tried to bring it up to her, he would chicken out and say something else. And night after night he'd lie awake kicking himself for being a coward.
And then, about three days after the ball, it hit him. Every chance he got, he'd go into the Room of Requirement and vanish for as long as he could without being missed and then, come out, sometimes smiling, sometimes scowling but always able to sleep better at night.
So, the weeks passed and finally, he headed for the R.O.R but to annoyance, found he couldn't get in. At a loss as to what to do, he went back to the Common Room and asked Lloyd Irving if he could borrow something from him. Ten minutes later, Luke was sitting on the Astronomy Tower, leaning against a wall, a guitar hanging from his shoulders.
He was utterly alone, he was going to practice what he'd been working on for so very very long. He began to strum, playing out a melody, sweet and gentle, slow and hopeful. After a while, he began to sing, his words echoing, drifting down along with the music of the guitar and into the room below the tower.
Don't break my heart before I give it to you
Don't tell me no before I ask you to
Don't say it doesn't fit before you try it on
There's too much to lose to be wrong
And it feels like there's something here
But I wanna see it before it disappears
And if there's something real between me and you
Well are we both open to
All these possibilities
So many little possibilities
Right in front of us
Close enough to touch
And far enough to have some time to see
All these possibilities
Oh these possibilities
Are written in the stars
We are who we are baby
And I can't help but think that possibly
There's possibility
Don't give me hope if there's nothing to this
Don't let me in if you're not there
What I'm feeling doesn't happen every day
So baby please play me fair
And it feels like there's something more
Than those crazy little crushes I've felt before
When you move in closer I can feel the rush
And now we're so close we can touch
All these possibilities
So many little possibilities
Right in front of us
Close enough to touch
And far enough to have some time to see
All these possibilities
Oh these possibilities
Are written in the stars
We are who we are baby
And I can't help but think that possibly
There's possibility
Finishing, he allowed the last notes to die away and then sighed slightly, "If you can't even face Mary without making an idiot of yourself, how are you going to sing for her? Dumbass." He muttered to the wind.
