"And that!" Said a woman impressively, giving a satisfied sigh she turned around, her eyes on her students. "Is the entirety of the Egyptian pyramids and the spells that were hidden in code for witches and wizards to discover! Now, I'd like you all to emulate that for the next time and write me a story entirely in Ancient script and slip in a secret code of some sort." And she looked sharply to Sirius, "And no Black, I will not tolerate anything ......rude, crude, offensive or otherwise inappropriate to be slipped into the code. Anyone who does so will not only get a zero on their essay, but will have points taken away from their house. Now, off you go. The stories will be turned in next time we meet. ....A foot and a half or more should do it." she called just before the bell rang.
After her class filed out for lunch, Raine followed them, locking her classroom door behind herself. She didn't know that Sirius rarely ate lunch in the Great Hall. She didn't know that he wasn't heading there at all. She just headed down the corridors, humming to herself, ready to tuck into the wonderful, marvelous delicious food the house elves had cooked.
She was just outside in the Great Hall before it dawned on her, she'd forgotten her book! She planned on eating outside and reading her book. It was the newest one in the series and she couldn't wait to get started! She doubled back, rushing along, she'd get it and come right back. It wouldn't take long at all.
The woman's long brown hair fanned out behind her as she hurried along the corridor, now empty of students. She took the chance to break into a run, if no one was around to see her, she wouldn't be setting a bad example. As she covered the distance back to her classroom, she slowed down and came to a slow walk, just in case her a portrait saw her.
She opened the door to her classroom and unlocked the door, heading inside she shut it behind her with a snap. She thought she heard someone swear, but glanced toward the window, saw it was open and figured she'd heard someone from outside shouting. She headed for her office door and unlocked that with a spell, then put her hand on the knob.
"WHATDOYOUTHNKYOU'REDOING?!" screamed the door.
Raine shrieked and leaped back, crashing into her desk and stepping on something, which yelled in return. She screamed again and whirled back around, then leaned down and looked under her desk. There was..... nobody there! Blinking, she bit her lip thoughtfully and then, reached down and felt around until she hit something solid. She grabbed onto the smooth fabric and pulled, revealing Sirius Black, crouching there.
Raising and eyebrow, she backed away, casually folding up the cloak, and placing it on her desk. "So. You jinxed my door to scream at me. Very clever. Getting caught? Not so clever." she smiled at him, "Now ....what am I to do in this situation?" she asked in mock thought, "Give you house points for being so clever? Noooo ....... take away points for breaking into my classroom and jinxing my door? Noooo that won't do either." She said, and then as if it had dawned on her she gasped and clasped her hands together. She smirked and peered over her fingers at the boy.
"I knooooooow." She said, her smirk widening. "Detention....tonight. With me." Raine was infamous for her detentions, they varied from severity depending on how much trouble a student was in. One boy said he'd only had to write lines, but all he'd done was swear loudly in the middle of class. Another one said that she'd been made to clean up a bathroom without magic after Peeves had tossed dragon dung and the toilets had backed up. She'd been given a spell to protect her from germs, but that was it. She had gotten in trouble for hexing a student. A third student said he'd had to help her reorganize her classroom, from top to bottom, and side to side. All without magic.
(Let me know if I have to change anything.)

Sirius had what you’d call a selective memory. He actually remembered things very well; it made him a very quick learner. There were just certain things that he didn’t care enough about to remember. It went well with his selective hearing, both of which were in play as he sat in his Ancient Runes lesson. As far as Sirius was concerned, there wasn’t even a lesson going on; he had an uncanny ability to tune out voices. He was fiddling with his wand in his hands, thinking about some spells he had come across and how to put them to use. He did, however, pay Professor Sage a glance as he heard his name in a lecture: apparently she was explaining some assignment that he wasn’t going to do, and if he was, he would probably do something offensive and get that zero anyway. So why bother?
Sirius was slow to get up when the bell rang, in no real hurry to get to lunch. He casually gathered his things and headed out the door at the tail end of the line leaving, becoming aware that the professor, too, was leaving. Sudden inspiration struck him and, acting on impulse, he turned into the nearest offshoot hallway without missing a beat, lingered in the darkness till the crowd had passed, and then doubled back. A quick spell later and the door to the Ancient Runes classroom was unlocked again, and he set to work immediately. Some quick wandwork and he was fairly certain his charm to give Professor Sage’s door a voice would work; however, before he got the chance to test it out, he heard footsteps approaching. Swearing under his breath, he whipped James’s invisibility cloak out from his pocket and draped it over himself, diving out of the way all in an instant before the door opened.
Luckily, the professor went straight for the door he’d just enchanted, and to his pleasure it worked, screaming with a deafening volume and scaring the daylights out of professor Sage. Unfortunately, his amusement didn’t last long as he felt a sharp heel dig into his foot, causing him to yelp like a dog whose tail had just been trodden on. Immediately he bit his lip and rolled his eyes to himself, knowing his cover had just been blown, and seconds later the Invisibility Cloak was pulled off of his body.
His eyes followed the cloak as he stood, and her triumphant voice began her tirade. Sirius, at least, paid somewhat attention to this one. He gave a grim, sarcastic smile to match hers, clearly not amused by her dramatization of the whole thing. “Have you considered acting lessons?” he said, slightly spitefully. It’s not like he was unaccustomed to receiving detentions, even from the infamous professor Sage. Sure, they weren’t desirable, but it was all in a day’s work. There never really was a point to them anyway; weren’t they meant to teach him something? To be good, and follow the rules? If it hadn’t worked so far, nothing would.
“Professor Sage, you know there’s nothing I’d rather do than spend my night in detention with you,” Sirius said, hands innocently folded behind his back, in what could be a charming and polite voice, but the sarcasm in this case was blindingly evident. She was far from his favorite teacher. Some of the others actually liked him, even though they grew annoyed with his antics; he still had his wit on his side, and many were forced to like him even if they wished they didn’t. “So what lesson am I supposed to learn this time, which we all know I will not?” he asked casually.

"Ever consider taking stealth lessons?" Raine asked coolly, unimpressed with Sirius' tone or his attitude. "Give it a rest Black." she said firmly and then turned on her heel and started for her desk again. "It won't be about a lesson."she told him, "You will report back to this classroom at five o'clock tonight." and she folded up the invisibility cloak and tucked it under her arm.
"I'll tell you what you are to do then." she said, "If you don't show up..... well then I'm afraid I'll have to report you to your head of house and I don't want to do that." she told him, "For now.....go. Get lunch and then get to the rest of your classes. You'll get this cloak back once you've done your detention. Don't worry, nothing will happen to it." she assured him.
That night, she had a large roll of parchment waiting on a desk, along with a quill, ink and books in a stack on the neighboring one. As Sirius entered the room, she smiled at him "Good." she said, "Now, here's the deal Black, you see those supplies there?" the woman asked, gesturing to the desk "You've behind. Woefully behind on your assignments in my class." She said, "And I know that you don't care. I know you couldn't give a rat's furry little ass about being behind. But you should care." she said, "I know you can do well in this class. You proved that on your O.W.Ls which were outstanding. You're an intelligent person Sirius. I know that, you know that .....everyone knows that. I know that if you just put as much effort into studying as you do your fabulous pranks, then you'd probably even surpass an amazing number of people."
She told him, "Which is why I want you to sit there and catch up on all your assignments for my class." She said, "You're missing a 12 inch essay on How Ancient Runes affected muggle research and beliefs, a drawing of the creatures used in pyramids to keep muggles away, the assignment story I gave this morning and finally .....the test you missed last time." she told him, watching his expression.
"Now, get to-" But with a terrific BANG Peeves flew into the room and with a scream of delight, he began trashing the room, destroying everything he could get his hands on.
"Peeves!" Bellowed Raine, drawing her wand and stalking toward him, "Peeves you stop that this instant!" but he wasn't listening, instead, he soared into her office and she glanced over at Sirius, just to make sure he wasn't trying to sneak away.
She stood outside her door and waited for Peeves to come out. The instant he did, she did something very unexpected. Her foot shot out, her body bent slightly to extend her reach and kicked Peeves in the face. He soared into the ceiling, dropping a little, slightly battered, very old book into her hands. He flew away swearing, and Raine simply smoothed down her robes and smirked slightly. "He'll think next time he tries stealing from me and wrecking my classroom." she said and shut the door, which didn't scream. She put a series of curses on it this time and then, slid the book into her robes and looked around the room.
It was ......a wreck. Her books had been torn, he'd spread ink all over the walls, the floor and the ceiling, some strange sort of goo stuck to the desks, dripping down and adding to the mess. Nothing was right. She had to think for a moment, now, she could have Sirius catch up on his work or she could make him think twice about breaking into her classroom and playing a prank on her.
"Your cloak is safe." She added, just to be sure "It wasn't stored in my office, it's somewhere else, very secure. I know this because I put a number of spells around the area. Peeves can't get in, nor can anyone else." She added with a small smile and then, she turned to Sirius
"Alright. The circumstances have changed somewhat." She announced, "You now have a choice Black." Raine told him, "You can either work on those assignments and work HARD ......or, since you won't do any other assignments next class anyway you can clean this classroom AND my office. Without magic." she added at the look on his face. "Take your pick Sirius. You have five minutes to decide, or I'm taking your choice away and picking for you." She said, knowing he'd probably take as much time as he could to chose.

For once in his life, Sirius was very prompt. He had no intention to make a good impression, or to accept the consequences of his own actions; honestly, and he had no trouble admitting it, he would have skipped. Unfortunately, there was a little snag in that he had successfully had his best friend's family cloak taken from him, and he owed it to James to get it back as soon as possible. And thus, Sirius arrived at Professor Sage's classroom, bitter, irritated, but on time.
"Good evening," he said a little coolly as he entered. She, however, seemed to not want to waste any time with the small talk and immediately began instructing him on his task for the evening. He rolled his eyes and opened his mouth to say how much he didn't care about the class, except she beat him to it. No, he really didn't care. He took Ancient Runes because he thought it could be kind of cool at times, but homework and attendance were something that were done on his own time. Plus, it was well paired with his favorite class so it'd be good to have a little knowledge. Or, in Sirius's case, a lot of knowledge, that could be a lot more if he made an effort. Sirius's intelligence was a natural-born gift, it was absolutely something he took for granted; to him, it was nothing more than another bragging point. "You know, as wonderful as that sounds, I'd prefer to continue letting people think they're smarter than me just because a letter on a sheet of parchment says so."
And as she went on to explain that he was to complete his missing work, he sighed and rolled his eyes noticeably once again, even though he had suspected where she was going with that. His motivation to do any of those assignments was nonexistent at the moment. "Right... that assignment from this morning... which was what again?" he said, not having been paying much attention at the time. However, the string of conversation was interrupted as the door banged open and he was suddenly engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos by none other than Peeves.
Sirius's eyes widened, but other than that he showed little evidence that he was alarmed by the poltergeist's sudden appearance. In fact, there was a slight calm in his demeanor as he watched Raine scream at Peeves, as he flew into her office, and then flew back out... and then was kicked forcefully into the ceiling. At this point an amused smile sneaked onto his face. By the time he flew out in the room and the two of them had the time to take in the surroundings, his traditional glowing smile had completely emerged. "Good one, Professor," he said in an impressed voice. "I'd give it a... 7.5 out of ten. Maybe an 8, if I'm feeling generous."
Sirius opened his mouth to inform the Professor that the cloak was not actually his, but promptly shut it again when he realized it didn't matter. Instead he merely said, "that's good. and I get it back as soon as I'm done here?" he questioned just to clarify. It was the whole reason he was here, so he'd make damn sure he didn't waste his time on a technicality.
His amusement at Peeve's antics did not last for long, as Raine now proposed a set of options for him, both of which sounded equally as undesirable. He raised his eyebrows at the newer choice, and a cloud of confusion formed in his eyes as she added that it would have to be done without magic. "How the hell do you clean this without magic?" he questioned. He knew there must be a way, because Muggles had to do it somehow, but he never had to know. When he was very young, his parents cleaned up after him, but that didn't last long. Fortunately for him he'd abuse the privilege of having a house-elf, and at school, well, he always liked making the caretaker's job miserable. He had absolutely no experience with the matter. "Whatever. I don't want to find out. Run those assignments by me again, prof," he said as he flung himself into the nearest desk. With a quick wave of his wand, a piece of parchment, a quill, and a bottle of ink soared through the air until they landed on his desk. His brown eyes looked unenthusiastically through his messy hair at her awaiting her response.

Did this boy's arrogance know no bounds? Imagine, thinking he was smarter than just about anyone! Raine didn't let her annoyance show on her face though, she knew Sirius would jump on it the second he saw it. She did however, smile at his praise and chuckled slightly, "Well when your little brother is too young to really defend himself from older kids, you've got to step in sometime. It's where I learned to kick like that." she told Sirius and then shook her head at him. Maybe he wasn't so bad.
Or ....maybe he was! "You really have no idea how to clean the muggle way?" she asked, unsure of if she should be impressed or disappointed or what. "You'll get your cloak back the moment your detention is finished. Provided you don't do a half-assed job of it." she added, "I know you only came here to get the cloak back in the first place. Why do you think I didn't return it right off the bat?" She asked and then watched him for a moment.
She shouldn't have given him a choice, making him clean would have been a laugh and a half, oh well. At least he'd get the work he was behind on done and she wouldn't have to flunk him or give him more detention. "Alright." She said, heading over to him. "It's simple really. You know these runes like the back of your hand, you proved that in your O.W.Ls" she told him, "But this time it's not really about the letters, at least not until your latest assignment. These others are about the rest of my class. A foot on How Ancient Runes affected muggle research and beliefs, a drawing of the creatures used in pyramids to keep muggles away, the assignment story I gave this morning and finally .....the test you missed last time." She repeated, "Basically, this first one explains itself, and the books you should use for reference are .... these." And she summoned a couple of them, "They're muggle books on the Egyptians and whatnot. The second one allows for a little creativity. That one should be fun, but I'm also looking for accuracy in the creature itself. Anything else is ....well just have fun with it. The story is also meant for fun, but you have to use ancient script and that code I mentioned. And please....nothing .....well nothing that's anything close to offensive please?" She added, "And then once all of that is done we'll start the test. Be warned Sirius." She added, "Slack off and I might have to give you another detention." she didn't want to, not really.
It was a waste of time for the both of them, if Sirius would just buckle down and do the work she knew he could do, then this thing wouldn't take any time at all. "Get to work, if you think it's too much work though .......you can clean up instead. But....once you start a paper you must finish it and you'll have to wait until one is done with before you can do anything else." and she headed toward her desk, sat down and began grading papers. Every now and again she'd turn her attention to a drawing but she always went back to the papers.
