"Peeves!" Raine shouted up at the man, her hair a mess, littered with bits of parchment and dripping with ink. "You tell me where you hid my kitten or I will end you!" and with surprising accuracy she threw a quill straight up the poltergeist's nose. "Now tell me where my kitten is!" She picked up a very large heavy pyramid paperweight and hefted it.
"Fine." Peeves spat, pulling the quill from his nostril. "No fun playing with you anyway. It's in the dungeons in a sack in a vase. Good luck finding it!" And away he soared.
Scowling, Raine left her office, using a cleaning spell for the ink in her hair and picking out bits of parchment with the other hand. "Sable had better be alright." She grumbled to herself, moving quickly down the corridors and through a few well known shortcuts.
As she strode down the corridors, she greeted various students she passed with either a smile, a nod or a hello but didn't stop to chat. She had to get her kitten! She knew he'd be terrified or hungry or both! Who knew how long Peeves had had him trapped in the dungeons? Raine spent a good twenty minutes scouring the dungeons for her kitten, asking anyone if they'd heard or seen anything but to her dismay there was no sign of her kitten anywhere.
She'd gotten him just a few weeks ago and he'd already wormed his way into her heart. She'd called him Toffee , and she was very attached to the little guy. Finally, she heard a tiny little mew as she entered a classroom that hadn't been used in so long, her shoes made prints in the dust, clear as day. There was a vase shaking violently, sealed up with a lid.
The professor gasped and ran to open it, "Don't worry Toffee I'm here!" But then, she noticed the sack just behind the vase. "What the?" she muttered, because it too was wriggling and, drawing her wand, she cast a spell to open it up and sure enough, a tiny fluffy kitten poked its little head out. "Toffee!" Raine gasped and snatched him up, nuzzling him gently. "You poor baby! You must've been so scared!" then, Raine paused and looked over at the moving vase.
"But if this is you....then what's in the vase?" she asked herself and set the kitten on the floor. "You reckon it's another cat?" the woman asked and the kitten replied 'Meeeeow' "I thought so. I'm opening it." Raine replied and took off the lid. She instantly wished she hadn't.
Toffee hissed and spat and took off running out of the room, Raine stood rooted to the spot, her face pale and her eyes wide and frightened. "Shit." She whispered, "R-...Ri-...Ridi...Ridikulus!" She shouted, but the boggart would not change nor leave.
It stood there, non-threatening and not frightening. To most people. To Raine....it was the most terrifying thing alive. The most terrifying person alive. "Hi." It said, in a kindly manner, "Would you like to meet my daughter?" Raine's mother Virginia stood there in plain view, wearing tattered robes, all discolored and worn out from overuse. Her hair was a light shade of her daughter's brown and streaked with gray. Her eyes were a dark green and far away. In her hands was a doll with a china face, cracked and glassy eyed. They matched the woman's eyes in everything but shade.
Raine screamed and turned to run, but in her terror, she crashed into a stack of desks and fell, losing her wand in the process. It rolled away out the door and the desks toppled over. Luckily, she wasn't hurt in the process, except for a twisted ankle, but the desks hit the door and slammed it shut, piling up in front of it. Raine whimpered and crawled back into a corner. "Keep away from me!" She screamed, "You're not my mother!"
"Now look what you've done!" The boggart hissed, "You've made Raine cry! You horrible woman!" and it began cooing to the doll, walking closer to Raine the entire time.
Raine screamed again and buried her face in her hands, shaking violently in her corner.
